Priyanka named UNICEF ambassador

NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor and former Miss World Priyanka Chopra was signed on as the National Ambassador for UNICEF in New Delhi on Tuesday (10 AUG 2010).

Chopra signed the appointment letter in the presence of UNICEF Representative to India Dr. Karin Hulshof and Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development D K Sikri.

Chopra, who has shot several spots for UNICEF's campaign to send girls to schools, will support UNICEF's work in promoting child rights and adolescents.

She joins other Bollywood stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore in supporting UNICEF's work in India and abroad.

"We are one of the very few countries that are youth driven and the potential of the youth in our country is tremendous," explained Chopra. "It's just about that little push. And I hope by lending my voice and by standing here, together with UNICEF, I can make a little bit of a difference, because I feel tremendously strongly about it."

Priyanka Chopra was crowned Miss World in 2000 and entered the Hindi film industry in 2002.

In 2009 she was awarded the National Award for the Best Actress for her portrayal of a fashion model's life in the movie "Fashion."

Her forthcoming releases are "Anjaana Anjaani" (Strangers-strangers) and "Saat Khoon Maaf" (Seven murders pardoned).

According to a UNICEF release, UNICEF Ambassadors are celebrities with a demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of children.

Highly talented in their individual right, they all share an ability to bring children's issues to attention, to galvanize support from the public and lead decision makers and to raise urgently needed funds for vital UNICEF programmes.
